A few days ago I was cleaning out a computer's hard drive and I found a treasure trove of files that I had nearly forgotten about. Firstly, I found one my very favorite bands from 2001 (Great Eastern) to 2002 (Hate): The Delgados. It also made me think of one my favorite people from those years: David Jack Daniels. I have not spoken with him in years but it brought back memories of visiting him in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, respectfully) back in 2002. I drove straight up to New York from my home in Columbia, South Carolina. It was a fantastic choice. I showed up at David's doorstep at 11pm and he immediately took me to Manhattan. It was my first NYC experience. It was thrilling.
I am a lover of nostalgia. It gives me so much pleasure to sit back and think about someone or something that made me happy in the past. It is like a free vacation.
Oh and speaking of the past:
This is a photograph taken by mentor, James Baker Hall, when I was 20 years old. I had been studying photography with him for a short while and I remember the very first image I developed in his darkroom that he was interested in was one I had taken of my friend Lisa:
It was odd but when everyone else was out photographing architecture and cemeteries (all the student photogs did it) I just photographed people. I looked at Avedon prints all day and photographed people all night.
